The Demon’s Insanity
A Blackheart Prince drabble by Kaitlyn Greiner

Blood dripped from the ends of Dante’s twin rapiers, staining the blades an even darker shade of black. He stood at his full height, towering over the humans and angels in attendance, a sickeningly cheerful grin plastered on his face, eyes shining wickedly.
And he was laughing. Just standing there, giggling like it was all a joke. Like he hadn’t just slaughtered the two humans he called his friends. He swayed dazedly, giggling all the while, those maddened ruby eyes flitting from one face to another, the ink-black slits of pupils tracking every flinch, every shudder, every horrified gasp.
It was all so delicious.
Another deranged giggle welled up in his throat. They were all so weak and helpless, angels and humans alike. Soft-hearted, soft-willed, soft-headed. The perfect prey for a demon with plenty of time to kill.
Time. Kill. Ha-ha-ha.
One of the angels stepped forward, feathery, white wings spread nervously, off-white locks standing up on end with fear. Dante’s manic grin grew wider.
“Aezr Aeon, how pleasant to see you~”
The angel simply pulled his infamous longsword from its scabbard on his back. If Aezr wanted a fight, Dante would gladly give it to him. He might even let the angel live a little while after he was done playing with him.
But… the idea of torturing him was just too sweet to pass up. The feel of the angel’s pale red blood as it dripped through his fingers, splashed onto his cheeks as he flayed the skin from Aezr’s back, pooled at his feet once the angel was finally dead and drained… The very thought made him smile.
And angel’s blood was such a pretty shade of red. Almost like that of a budding rose; almost pink in color, with little swathes of red weaving throughout. Not like a demon’s blood, dead black like the frozen waste to which they were banished.
Aezr raised his sword, face impassive, and slashed across Dante’s torso, cutting into the scars from so many previous insanities, spilling the ink-black liquid that flowed in Dante’s veins onto the cold earth below. The demon simply swayed there, enduring hit after hit, letting the black blood drip down his now-bare chest, the tips of his rapiers still touching the ground.
His spindly figure was covered in black gore. Dante lowered his head, letting the inky blood splatter onto his face and hair, turning the stark-white locks into a blended checkerboard. Aezr lowered the tip of his black-stained sword, watching for any signs of movement from the demon.
Another manic grin snuck its way across Dante’s features, dainty fangs glinting through the blackness that stained his face, the ruby-red of his eyes bleeding out into the white sclera, pupils elongating to a reptilian length, black tips touching the edges of his eyelids.
“I’m afraid it will take more than that to kill me, Aezr~”
Dante reached a hand out to the angel, pointed black claws replacing his elegantly trimmed nails, the delicate silk of his ragged, bell-sleeved tailcoat morphing into an even more delicate wing membrane, stretching across his now-bare arms and connecting just beneath his shoulder blades. Mad giggles burst from his lips as white lightning crackled between the tips of his slender claws, arcing from point to matte-black point.
The demon grinned wickedly, sending white tendrils of death slashing into Aezr and the rest of the crowd, slicing through flesh like paper, spattering the grinning demon with gore. The red, lively blood of humans, the pale-rose blood of angels, the dark-violet blood of his kind’s fiendish underlings, the reddish-orange of vampiric blood; it all mingled and mixed with the ink-black ichor staining Dante’s body, painting him in shades of fleeting life while those around him fell to pieces, sliced apart by the beams of white lightning.
Dante smiled.
It was all so delicious.
